Victim Identification

You should be 100% certain about the decedent’s identity and the way in which the victim was identified before delivering a notification to the next of kin (NOK) or the identified family member who has a legal right to make decisions for the victim.

  • How was the decedent identified?

  • How does your jurisdiction identify deceased individuals? Do you know?

  • Was the identification done visually or forensically? Most jurisdictions use visual identification, which is not foolproof.

If you are not 100% certain about the victim’s identity, do not do the notification.
