FBI Releases Uniform Crime Report Data for First Quarter of 2023

The FBI released its Quarterly Uniform Crime Report data for the first quarter of 2023 (January-March) on June 29, 2023. The table can be downloaded by clicking on the Download Quarterly Table Data link on the Quarterly Uniform Crime Report page on the Crime Data Explorer website.

Quarterly Uniform Crime Report data releases present the number of violent and property crime offenses known to law enforcement agencies who:

The UCR data table for the first quarter of 2023 is based on crime data that 12,518 of the 18,900 law enforcement agencies in the United States shared with the FBI.

When NIBRS reporting for a given quarter has major gaps—such as large volumes of missing crime data from the nation's most populated cities—there's a general concern that the resulting UCR data releases might not paint an accurate picture of national crime trends.

National crime trends are especially affected by law enforcement agencies that serve populations with at least 1 million inhabitants. The FBI can't make confident statements about national crime trends unless NIBRS crime data represents at least 60% of these cities' populations.

Thus, the Quarter 1 table doesn't include year-over-year data trends by region or aggregate population group because NIBRS reporting by the law enforcement agencies serving these cities didn't meet the 60% threshold.
