To register for a class, please contact our office at biometric_training@leo.gov or 304-625-5279. Classes are open to current employees of federal, law enforcement, or criminal justice agencies with valid Originating Agency Numbers (ORI) on file with the FBI.
To help agencies submit accurate and high-quality biometric images and criminal history data enabling reliable and consistent searches, the Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) Division offers biometric and criminal history training free of charge to all authorized agencies.
All federal employees, law enforcement, and criminal justice agencies with an authorized Originating Agency Identifier (ORI) number can use our products and services in the following ways:
- Courses are routinely offered at the CJIS Division facility in Clarksburg, West Virginia. Note: Travel/lodging expenses are the responsibility of the requesting agency.
- Multiple courses can be offered sequentially upon request.
Description: This course is designed to enhance the skills of the experienced fingerprint examiner, providing the participants with information on the application of the ACE-V process to challenging comparisons. This training is also beneficial for examiners preparing to take the IAI Tenprint Certification Test. Course curriculum consists of presentations, facilitated discussions, and practical exercises.
Prerequisite: Prior comparison experience.

Description: This course is designed to provide the skills and knowledge to professionals from the law enforcement and intelligence communities working in the fields of face recognition and face comparison. It also provides students with awareness and understanding of the face comparison discipline. This training is consistent with the guidelines and recommendations outlined by the Facial Identification Scientific Working Group (FISWG).

Description: This course is for individuals interested in obtaining a basic understanding of fingerprints. Participants will learn the fingerprint pattern types, classification using the Henry (if applicable to the agency), National Crime Information Center (NCIC) systems, and AFIS Pattern Classification (APAT) code. The course will demonstrate procedures to effect an identification or exclusion, and will cover recommended techniques to record/collect legible fingerprints and palm prints. Course curriculum consists of presentations, facilitated discussions, and practical exercises.

Description: This course provides an understanding of the FBI Identity History Summary (IdHS) generated as a result of an NGI fingerprint search. Topics covered include the fields, codes, and abbreviations the FBI uses to enter data. Additionally, the course emphasizes the importance of the IdHS to both criminal and civil applicant agencies, as well as the importance of submitting dispositions to complete the FBI record. NOTE: This course is NOT “Understanding the NCIC Record.” However, certain aspects of the NCIC record will be covered.

Description: This course is designed for latent print examiners who work cases and enter latent fingerprints for search through the Next Generation Identification (NGI) using the ULW software. Some of the processes covered include importing a latent fingerprint, encoding minutiae points, sending to the NGI for search, and conducting comparisons of fingerprints with possible candidates returned from the NGI.
