Statistics on Law Enforcement Officer Deaths in the Line of Duty from January through November 2024

The 59 law enforcement officers who were feloniously killed in the first 11 months of 2024 represent a 7.3 percent increase compared to the 55 officers killed during the same period in 2023. Firearms were used in 69.5 percent (41) of the felonious deaths in 2024. Agencies did not report the type of firearm used in 92.7 percent (38) of the incidents. Among officers killed with firearms, 4 were confirmed to have been wearing body armor. The leading circumstances surrounding officers’ deaths in felonious incidents included activities related to investigative/enforcement activities (19), unprovoked attacks (8), and ambushes (6).

The 40 accidental law enforcement deaths in the first 11 months of 2024 represented a 29 percent increase when compared to the 31 deaths at the same time in 2023. Thus far in 2024, the leading causes of accidental deaths have been motor vehicle crashes (21) and pedestrian officers struck by vehicles (8). The southern region has the most law enforcement deaths to date in 2024 with 47 deaths total (24 felonious and 23 accidental). Medical conditions resulting in officer deaths in the line of duty in 2024 are natural causes (15), heart attack (11), conditions related to 9/11 (8), and cancer (3).
